Ansys STK Shield Plus: Addressing Survivability from Radiation, Space Plasmas, and Atmospheric Electricity
What is Ansys STK Shield Plus? Simply, it is software that provides users with the ability to quickly address survivability concerns caused by:
- Electromagnetic (EM) radiation
- Space plasmas
- High-energy radiation
- Atmospheric electricity
“The idea is to be able to quickly assess, after a change in mission parameters, if electronic equipment is still reliable,” EMA Lead Product Manager and Principal Scientist II Kevin-Druis Merenda said.
STK Shield Plus is add-on to Ansys STK. It provides six streamlined workflows optimized for fast and focused analysis. Workflows are:
- ·Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness
- Lightning risk analysis
- Cable shielding evaluation
- Radiation dose depth curve generation
- 3D radiation dose modeling
- Spacecraft surface ESD risk assessment
The advanced physics solutions in STK Shield Plus are available on the Ansys Discovery platform. The workflows streamline the process of assigning materials, setting up radiation environments, meshing, running and post processing results. By leveraging these workflows, engineers can quickly confirm the continuing reliability of the mission when its parameters are changed.
The software supports a variety of roles, including EMC engineers, electrical engineers, space radiation effects engineers, and radiation hardening engineers and aims to bring all the pieces together.
“With Ansys STK Shield plus, we can tie these more complex analyses to the mission design and have the satellite integrator be able to quickly assess if any changes in the design parameters are being affected at the component level which were designed by the more specific engineers.”
